Cold Tokyo Days

It’s been cold and sort of gloomy off and on recently in Tokyo. There have been some intermittent days of sunshine as well, but for the most part it’s just been that long, dull, slow drag through the middle of January.

I know I haven’t updated in forever, but that’s because I’ve been working on the grand site redesign I’ve been talking about since last year. As some of you may have noticed, I haven’t updated my moblog in almost a year, primarily because the script that powers it just sort of stopped working one day. Unfortunately, that script is written in Perl, a language I don’t know, so that kind of was that.

A couple of weeks ago, I decided that enough was enough, and I buckled down and started to write a new moblogging program from scratch in PHP. Turns out this is something that is a lot harder to do than it first appears, mainly because while it’s easy to send e-mail messages using PHP, it’s a whole different story when you want to read e-mail messages using PHP – especially if you need to parse out images and stuff.

Anyway, after a lot of elbow grease (and learning more than I ever wanted to know about MIME types and e-mail formats), I’ve finally got the main core of the script working. It’s not done yet, but this was the last major obstacle left to tackle in my site update, and now that it’s (almost) out of the way, the update should be chugging along towards the finish in short order.

Enough of the excuses. I’ll be back with the next installment of the Great Autumn Roadtrip 2008 soon, so stay tuned!
